Sustainability

The earth’s environment is under severe stress from uncontrolled human activity, threatening the survival of our society and the performance of our mission.

We accept that we must work to preserve the environmental sustainability of the planet, at all levels of our operations.

We aspire to minimise our impact on our environment and maximise the effective use of resources. We strive to achieve this by increasing communication and awareness of our efforts in accordance with our Sustainability Policy and fostering responsible environmental behaviour amongst the team.

We practise responsible resource use by:

  • Using an electricity provider that uses 76% renewable energy.

  • Segregating and disposing of waste appropriately. We have recycling points throughout the practice and have a separate bin for hard to recycle plastic (like syringe caps). We also have a compost bin for our food waste and a Bio bin for our pharmaceutical waste.

  • Performing a waste audit.

  • Distilling our own water to reduce the plastic used for bottled purified water.

  • Using fabric surgical drapes and gowns that are re-sterilised rather than the single use options.

  • Trying to minimise our paper usage, by emailing invoices and use reusable hospital sheets.

  • Using syringes and other consumables made from recycled materials, where possible.

  • Using fleece animal bedding that is easier to wash and line dry.

  • Using biodegradable fair-trade tea bags and ordering our milk locally, which comes in a glass bottle.

  • Using rechargeable batteries, where possible.

We empower the team by:

  • Having a sustainability team and sustainability champion within our practice.

  • Including a green section in our general meetings.

We use medicines responsibly by:

  • Advising clients to return unused medications for appropriate safe disposal.

  • Taking active steps to reduce medicine overprescribing.

  • Avoiding drug wastage through good stocking principles and dispose of drugs correctly.

  • Practising responsible antimicrobial stewardship and antiparasitic control.

We are sustainable in our operation by:

  • Complying with environmental legislation.

  • Employing techniques to minimise anaesthetic gas usage. For example using re-breathing anaesthetic circuits.

  • Using an oxygen concentrator, only producing the amount we require.

  • Promoting biodiversity in our surroundings by having some flowers in our carpark and a birdbox.
