Recognising the Signs: Is Your Pet Trying to Tell You Something?

ree

Ever wondered if your dog’s water bowl seems to empty faster than usual, or if your cat has suddenly become a frequent visitor to the litter tray?

These could be your furry friend’s way of waving a little red flag!

Diabetes in pets often brings some tell-tale clues. Here are a few clinical signs to look out for:

  • Increased thirst (polydipsia) – you may find your pet drinking much more water than usual.

  • Frequent urination (polyuria) – dogs may ask to go out more often, while cats might be using the litter tray excessively.

  • Weight loss despite normal or increased appetite – your pet could be eating more but losing weight unexpectedly.

  • Lethargy – appearing tired, less playful, or reluctant to exercise.

  • Changes in appetite – some pets may have a ravenous appetite, while others could go off their food.

  • Cloudy eyes or cataracts (especially in dogs) – leading to changes in vision or bumping into objects.

  • Poor coat condition (especially in cats) – coats may become dull, scruffy, or unkempt.

  • Recurrent infections – urinary tract or skin infections may occur more frequently.

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea – in more advanced or unstable cases.

If your pet is showing any of these signs, it’s always best to schedule an appointment with a Vet. Early intervention can make a significant difference to your pet’s health and quality of life.
