Building the Perfect Bunny Habitat - A Guide to Rabbit Housing

Creating a safe and comfortable home for your rabbit is one of the most important aspects of rabbit husbandry. A well-designed habitat not only keeps your bunny happy but also ensures they stay healthy and stress-free.

Housing Options 

When it comes to rabbit housing, the choices are endless! Whether you opt for a traditional hutch, an indoor playpen, or a free-roaming setup in a bunny-proofed room, the key is space. Rabbits need enough room to hop, stretch, and stand on their hind legs comfortably. The minimum recommended space is at least 4 times the size of your rabbit when fully stretched out. 

Flooring Matters 

Avoid wire flooring, as it can hurt your rabbit's sensitive feet. Instead, use solid flooring covered with materials like soft mats or fleece liners. These are gentle on their paws and easy to clean. 

Bedding and Comfort 

Provide a cozy spot for your rabbit to rest. A soft pile of hay can double as both bedding and a snack! You can also use rabbit-safe blankets or cushions, but be sure your bunny isn’t chewing on them excessively.

Enrichment and Exploration 

Rabbits are naturally curious creatures and need stimulation to keep boredom at bay. Include tunnels, cardboard boxes, and chew toys to engage their minds. Rotating toys regularly can also keep things fresh and exciting. 

Temperature Control 

Rabbits are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Keep their habitat in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or drafts. Ideal temperatures range between 15-21°C to keep them comfortable year-round. 

Cleaning and Maintenance 

A clean habitat is a healthy habitat. Spot-clean daily by removing soiled bedding and droppings, and do a deep clean weekly by washing all surfaces and accessories with rabbit-safe cleaners.
