To celebrate Diabetes Awareness Month in the veterinary world, we’re excited to bring you a special series of weekly posts throughout the next month, shining a spotlight on diabetes in dogs and cats.
Each week, we’ll delve into a different aspect of this important condition, helping you understand what diabetes means for your furry family member and how you can care for them every step of the way.
Week 1: Understanding Diabetes in Pets
Diabetes is a condition that affects not only people, but also our beloved pets. In simple terms, diabetes happens when your dog or cat’s body isn’t able to properly regulate their blood sugar. This usually occurs because their body doesn’t make enough insulin, or their cells stop responding to insulin as they should. The result is higher sugar levels in the blood, which can cause a variety of health issues over time.

In dogs and cats, the most common form is diabetes mellitus, and just like in humans, it’s a lifelong condition that requires commitment and care. The good news? With the right management, diabetic pets can live happy, active lives.
